ASSIST WEIGHT MAINTENANCE

What is weight regain?

Weight regain is when you regain weight that you had previously lost intentionally. It’s something that may be experienced by people who lose weight through all forms of weight loss therapies, including calorie reduction, weight loss programs or other weight loss therapies.

Why does weight regain happen?

When you stop any weight loss therapy, weight regain can be a significant challenge. There are functions of the body (physiological mechanisms) besides just food intake and exercise that drive weight regain, therefore the battle to continue to lose weight or maintain weight may be even more difficult after weight loss.1

Changes to hormones after weight loss can increase appetite while resting metabolic rate slows down (the calories your body burns to keep it functioning). This occurs as the body is trying to stop you from losing more weight by using less calories for energy.

How can I maintain my weight, or continue on my weight loss journey?

Maintaining weight loss is not easy! It requires a long-term commitment to healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and ongoing support.

If you are looking to continue your weight loss journey or maintain your weight after stopping your current weight loss therapy, a very low energy diet program or the incorporation of very low energy food products can provide a nutritionally balanced solution for weight management in the long-term.

Very low energy diet (VLED) programs offer a structured approach to calorie restriction and portion control, which includes the use of specially formulated very low energy food products to replace 1, 2 or 3 meals a day. With the support of a healthcare professional, VLED programs and products can be part of your weight management plan that includes regular physical activity, balanced eating, and a healthy lifestyle.

There is no doubt that weight regain can be frustrating. With the right nutritional support, you can keep working towards maintaining your goal weight. Speak to your dietitian or healthcare professional if you are struggling to maintain your weight loss and considering whether a VLED program is suitable for you.
